Recreation around Limekiln Cottage
Walking
There are opportunities for the casual walker in every direction including marked routes such as the Leitrim Way and the Arigna Miners' Way. The unspoilt countryside is covered by a network of lanes, forest paths and mountain tracks. In addition many of the surrounding hills within a range of an hour's distance by car are dotted by underground tombs and cairns, many of them dating from the Bronze age.
Boating
Battlebridge is the entrance to Lough Allen Canal, and Carrick-on-Shannon has a sizeable marina and numerous boat rental companies, which there are links to on the Leitrim website.
Cycling
You can also hire bicycles in Carrick-on-Shannon. There are many marked cycle trails including Leitrim's Kingfisher Trail.
Riding
There are riding stables outside Leitrim village and a number of other equestrian centres in the area.
Music
There are many opportunities to enjoy the traditional music of Ireland from evenings in the Beirne's pub across the road to specific music festivals in surrounding villages depending on the time of year. For example, every August the nearby village of Keadue hosts the O'Carolan annual international harp festival and in July the Dr. Douglas Hyde Summer School of Traditional Irish Music & Dance often has concerts.
